MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL — Around 2,500 runners from across the globe gathered for an exhilarating test of endurance at the first-ever Asenso Misamis Occidental Marathon, organized by the provincial government under the leadership of Governor Henry S. Oaminal. The event, held at the MOPAC Grandstand in Oroquieta City, aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle, mental and physical fitness, and strengthen camaraderie and sportsmanship among participants.

The marathon featured four race categories to cater to different fitness levels: the 5K for beginners, the 10K for those seeking a greater challenge, the 21K half-marathon, and the ultimate 42K full marathon for the most dedicated athletes.

Throughout the race, the official route was supported with hydration stations, medical teams, rescue vehicles, and marshals to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. One of the event’s highlights was the inclusion of local delicacies along the course, offering runners a unique and energizing experience. Stations with fresh fruits and traditional snacks provided an extra boost for athletes as they made their way to the finish line.

Gilbert Lydo, a runner from Bayabas, Quizon, Manila, praised the event, saying, “The route was great, flat, and with plenty of water stations. The organization was excellent, and the prizes were generous. I hope the provincial government continues supporting sports and the people of Misamis.”

David Kipsang, who secured second place in the 21K race, shared his thoughts: “This marathon was well-organized, and the people were friendly. I trained for two months for this event, and I enjoyed the cool weather here. Running facilities are expensive, so the support for athletes is really motivating.”

In the 42k full marathon, the male category podium was led by Richard Salaño from Bulakan, who clinched first place with a remarkable time of two hours, thirty-three minutes, and six seconds. He was followed by David Kipsang from Manila who finished in two hours, thirty-three minutes, and ten seconds, and Florendo Lapiz from Bukidnon, who secured third place with a time of two hours, thirty-three minutes, and thirty-eight seconds.

In the female category, Christine Hallasgo took the top spot with a notable finish of three hours, three minutes, and thirty-nine seconds. Jane Muriuki came in second with a time of three hours, four minutes, and thirteen seconds, while Artjoy Torregosa rounded out the top three with a finish time of three hours, nine minutes, and fifty-two seconds.

The provincial government of Misamis Occidental made sure every aspect of the marathon was carefully planned and executed. The efforts were key to creating a seamless and enjoyable event, from organizing safety measures and managing traffic to enhancing the festive atmosphere with local culture and performances.

Governor Henry S. Oaminal expressed his pride in the event’s success: “We are proud to host this marathon, welcoming participants from all over the Philippines and the world. It’s a fantastic way to promote fitness, community, and the rich culture of Misamis Occidental,” he said.

The Asenso MisOcc Marathon was not only a test of physical limits but also a celebration of the spirit of sportsmanship and community. This inaugural event is sure to become a fixture in the region’s calendar, continuing to inspire and unite runners from all walks of life. (SN/PGMO)
